Election Ballot for the Board of Governors 2025

The Alumni Association’s Nominating Committee has recommended, and the Board of Governors has received for publication, the following slate of nominees for election to seats on the Board of Governors for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2025:

New Members Up For Election

Amivi Atsu ’20
Ms. Atsu graduated from MC with an associate’s degree in business administration. As a student at MC, she participated in Impact MC and MC Governance, as well as served as a student speaker at the Maryland Association of Community Colleges (MACC) conference along with the president of MC at the time, Dr. DeRionne Pollard. She transferred to the University of Baltimore (UB) and received a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2024. While at UB, she served as vice president of finance for the SGA, treasurer for Beta Alpha Psi, and as a tax preparer for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, particularly helping individuals whose first language is French. She currently works at PwC as an accountant and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) candidate. She frequently volunteers with the Junior Achievement program, helping young people learn more about how to manage their money.

Madison Vital ‘21
Ms. Vital graduated from MC with an associate’s degree in General Studies, Social Sciences, Administration and Health Core (SSAH). As a student at MC, she served as vice president of the Student Senate and executive chair of the Student Activities Board, and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the Spanish Honor Society, and MC Leads. She was also recognized as the 2021 Presidential Scholar and received several awards, including the Montgomery College Presidential Service Award and the Ruth B. Dinbergs and Jean M. Furgol Excellence in Political Science Award. She is currently a junior at Stevenson University, pursuing a B.S. in Legal Studies. She works as the Office Manager at Fedder and Garten Professional Association. Outside of work and school, she’s a member of the Pratt Society and the Northwest Chamber of Commerce, and a volunteer with the MC Alumni Association’s legislative committee. She also holds a multitude of state and local awards for community service pertaining to spreading awareness on drug addiction/alcoholism.

Mariam Yaldram ’16
Ms. Yaldram graduated from MC with an associate’s degree in history. As a student at MC, she served as vice president of the Germantown Student Senate, vice-chair of the Student Council, president of the History Club, and a leader of numerous other student activities and organizations. She also participated in the Renaissance Scholars program and studied abroad in Ethiopia. She transferred to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) at the Universities at Shady Grove Campus (USG), receiving a bachelor’s degree in history in 2020. While at UMBC, she was involved with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Theta Kappa, Gamma Kappa Chapter (UMBC) of Delta Alpha Pi - International Disability Honor Society, UMBC Chapter of Young Alumni (CYA), and more. Currently, she is a special education teacher at Ingenuity Prep in Washington, D.C., a corps member with Teach for America D.C. region, and a peer mentor at Fulbright Lotus. In her free time, Mariam volunteers her time as a member of the UMBC Alumni Board of Directors and secretary for Fulbrighters with Disabilities.

Sofia Perez ’25
Ms. Perez graduated from MC with an associate’s degree in General Studies: STEM. As a student at MC, she served as president of the Takoma Park/Silver Spring SGA, chair of the Student Activities Board, PIC MC student board member, and Philanthropy Council member. She is also a participant in the Southern Management Leadership Program. In the fall, she will be attending the University of Maryland and studying biological science with plans to continue with genetic research and environmental advocacy. In addition to her student experiences, she has worked as an intern and substitute teacher at multiple MCPS schools, volunteered at Interfaith Works in Rockville, and currently serves as an active member of a community service committee.

Steve Simon ’81
Mr. Simon graduated from MC with an associate’s degree in radio/TV broadcasting. As a student, he was an active reporter and editor for The Spur, the Rockville campus student newspaper. He was managing editor and editor-in-chief in his last two semesters. Later in life – before he became an employee of MC as the Director of Communications from 1999-2008 – he was on the MC Alumni Board of Governors, having risen to the vice president role. He has more than three decades of experience in the media and public relations fields, having worked previously in several senior-level communications posts for local government agencies, educational institutions, and business organizations.Throughout his career, he has specialized in media, public and community relations; crisis communications; brand management and marketing; press event coordination; speech-writing and other forms of executive-level writing; and policy and communications support for public officials and business leaders. He's written hundreds of speeches and event remarks for elected officials, college presidents and administrators, school superintendents, and corporate executives. He currently works on a part-time basis as the partnership producer for The College Tour (TV show).

Current Board Members Up For Reelection

Kim Potter ’93 '17
Ms. Potter retired from MC as the digital learning center specialist in 2025 after 29 years at the College. She has acted as both chair and vice-chair of the Alumni Association’s scholarships committee.

Liz Brandenburg ’08
Ms. Brandenburg retired from MC as the biology lab coordinator in 2014 after 45 years at the College and 15 years as president of the AFSCME local staff union. She has chaired the Association’s mentoring and legislative committees.

Lucy Vitaliti ‘77
Dr. Vitaliti is a student-life professional focusing on service learning opportunities at MC. She is a past president of the Association and supported the Leggett Legacy Forward event in Fall 2018. She has served as the Board of Governors’ liaison to alumni chapter organizations.
