Montgomery College Donates Over 3,100 Personal Protective Equipment Items to County First Responders and Medical Personnel

Answering a call from its Montgomery County Government partners amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Montgomery College has donated more than 3,100 pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

The donation was facilitated by the College’s Coronavirus Advisory Team (CAT) and the items were donated directly from MC’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Nursing, Physical Therapy Assistant, Radiologic Technology, and Surgical Technology programs. The team gathered, packaged, and delivered the equipment and supplies, including N95 protective face masks, late Tuesday evening.

“Facing a critical shortage of protective equipment for first responders and medical personnel,” county health officials said this morning that PPE is needed immediately to help keep first responders and healthcare workers (doctors, nurses and other caregivers) safe while working in our county and on the pandemic’s frontlines.

“We are extremely fortunate to have additional supplies above our regular PPE supplies to donate to the health care teams across Montgomery County,” said Dr. Monique Davis, Collegewide Instructional Dean of Health Sciences/Director of Nursing. “These donations are just one example of the College’s ongoing commitment and dedication to the health and well-being of our Montgomery County community.”

“In addition to what we were able to gather from the individual Health Science programs, we were able to donate all of the personal protective equipment purchased for our annual mass casualty drill that was canceled due to the COVID-19 crisis,” said Melissa Sprague, interim Chair of Health Sciences.

The drill, originally scheduled for April 25, is an annual event where students and faculty from each of MC’s Health Science programs volunteer in an interdisciplinary mass casualty simulation on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus.

The CAT consists of Dr. Davis, Ms. Sprague, Rebecca Thomas, Rockville Campus Biology Department Chair, Adam Reid, Clery Compliance Manager, and Carlo Sanchez, interim Assistant Director of Public Safety at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus.

“We would like to thank the College’s Board of Trustees and MC President Pollard for their swift actions to make donating these much-needed items possible,” Davis said.
