Montgomery College Celebrates "Banned Books Week" with Events at Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus

WHAT: The Takoma Park/Silver Spring (TP/SS) Banned Book Week Committee, along with Montgomery College’s Reading and English Department and MC Library, will host a week of events highlighting the importance of free reading and access to diverse literature. Activities include readings, panel discussions, author talks, interactive games, and opportunities for students to engage with frequently challenged books.
WHEN: Monday, October 6 through Friday, October 10, 2025.

- All Week (10 a.m.–2 p.m., P3 Lobby): “Check Out a Banned Book” tables, featuring unlimited checkout access to titles such as The Kite Runner, The Bluest Eye, The Color Purple, To Kill a Mockingbird, and more.
- Tuesday, October 7 at 10:30 a.m. (CM 211 and via Zoom): Banned Book Reading and Panel Discussion with Professors Greg Wahl and Lisa Nevans-Locke, and MC student Diane Carillo. Featured books: My Rainbow, Pride Puppy, Prince and Knight. Followed by a student “Graffiti Wall in Support of Free Reading.” Snacks provided.
- Thursday, October 9 (CM 211 and via Zoom):
- 11 a.m.: Author Talk with Saundra Mitchell — “Behind the Scenes of a Book Banning”
- 2:30 p.m.: Author Talk with Saundra Mitchell — “Who Gets to Be on the Shelf?”

WHY: Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship and celebrates the freedom to read. Montgomery College events provide students and the community with engaging opportunities to reflect on access, equity, and representation in literature.
