Frequently Asked Questions
Data Discrepancies - Why don't the numbers match?
The Office of Institutional Research & Effectiveness (OIRE) must sometimes try to
explain data discrepancies:
• between reports provided for
different purposes
• when data that OIRE provides
does not match data from other
departments or other sources
• when data changes from one
report to another
The most common reasons for data discrepancies relate to the definitions employed and the criteria used to select and report data. For example, enrollment data might appear straightforward, but various definitional or inclusionary factors could result in different results.
