Global Learning at MC

global learning at mc

Global learning is a critical analysis of and engagement with complex, interdependent global systems and legacies and their implications for people's lives and the earth's sustainability. Participating in global learning can be a unique life-changing experience. Global learning can happen anywhere: on or off campus, in the classroom, in the lab, in the field, and abroad. There are many expressions and manifestations of global learning from a pedagogical point of view. A global learning experience could be a course that engages broad international questions and issues or particular regions, cultures, and languages, or both.

Below is a list of resources for Global Learning at Montgomery College.

Global Classrooms

Global Classrooms (GC)new window is an approach to teaching and learning that brings together geographically distant instructors and students from different lingua-cultural backgrounds to communicate and collaborate through online tools and innovative teaching methodologies. The Montgomery College Global Classrooms Faculty Fellowship (GCFF), sponsored by the Humanities Department and ELITE, provides an opportunity for faculty members across the Humanities and Social Sciences divisions to collaborate with faculty from our international partner institutions.

UN SDG Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellowship

Open educational resources (OERs) increase access to education and empower students in the learning process. Open pedagogy–a component of OERs–places the student at the center of that learning process in a more engaging, collaborative learning environment in order to achieve social justice in the community. Montgomery College is fully committed to social justice as evidenced by the Academic Master Plan and the Middle States Re-accreditation Self Study. This Open Pedagogy Fellowshipnew window sponsored by ELITE is designed to assist faculty with creating three renewable assignments (all of which will have a Creative Commons license).

Global Humanities Institute

The Global Humanitiesnew window Institute works to have a major impact on the teaching and learning of the humanities at Montgomery College. In addition to our work with faculty fellows, campus events and support of faculty scholarship, we also aim to create new courses, to modify existing courses, and to create learning communities that adopt a global perspective.  We strongly believe that adopting a broadly humanistic and global perspective on the issues that confront our world today is an important means of preparing students and faculty for a complex and intricate future, with issues, concerns and opportunities that are unprecedented. We know that in order to address the needs of our societies and communities in the future, we will need a deep understanding of our global interconnectedness.

Study Abroad and International Education

See the world, receive a world-class education, and dive into the global economy. Montgomery County has a large and diverse ethnic population which is reflected in enrollments at the three Montgomery College campuses. The college mission to bring a greater awareness of global perspectives to the student body and community has led to the development of an International Education program that provides opportunities through a variety of activities to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of other cultures. Study Abroadnew window has been a part of Montgomery College since 1996. Formed with the International Education program, it addresses the International Education mission through five areas: education, extended study abroad, culture, travel, and continuing education.
