Student Parent Program

Welcome, Student Parents!
At Montgomery College, we understand that being a student-parent comes with unique challenges—and strengths. We value the contributions student parents bring to our campuses, and we look forward to working with you on your academic journey. Whether you’re returning to school after a break or are just starting out, we are ready to help you navigate the academic landscape.
Student-Parent Community
Being a parent while pursuing your degree is a big job, but you’re not alone. At Montgomery College, approximately 15%-20% of students are parenting young children while attending college. Join our online student-parent network to connect with others, share tips, and get support throughout your academic journey. You can also take part in the parenting workshops and support groups that take place throughout the year.
- Flexible Learning Options: Life as a parent is busy, and we get that! That's why we offer flexible scheduling for most academic programs—choose from evening, weekend, and/or online. Whether you are on campus or at home, you can find a learning schedule that works around your family’s needs.
- Personalized Advising: Our team of advisors is here to help you create a plan that works for your life. Whether you need help with course selection, time management, or balancing your academic and family responsibilities, we’re committed to helping you succeed. Schedule a one-on-one advising session here.
- Family Friendly Study Spaces: Need a quiet space to study or meet with a tutor? Our designated family friendly study spaces in our libraries offer a comfortable, child-friendly environment, allowing you to get your work done while keeping your child close. And, each campus provides a food bank with snacks, baby supplies, and other essentials.
- Mentorship: We offer the student parent mentoring program to help you connect with others who understand the journey you’re on. You’ll find encouragement, advice, and resources through our regular workshops and events. Check out upcoming workshops and sign up by emailing mcstudentparents@montgomerycollege.edu.

Events
The Family Empowerment Resource Fair (formerly, Single Parent Conference) is an annual event that connects parents and individuals who care for children of all ages with various resources at Montgomery College, Montgomery County, and the state of Maryland.
Past Events
On April 28, Montgomery College, in proud partnership with Believe in Students and Ascend at the Aspen Institute, hosted the national premiere of Supporting the Basic Needs of Parenting Students — the first professional development curriculum in the country designed to equip faculty, staff and parenting students with tools to better support parenting students in higher education.
This powerful event featured documentary-style video shorts that spotlighted the real stories and lived experiences of Montgomery College’s own student parents — bringing their voices, challenges, and resilience to the forefront. Also captured, were the voices from faculty and institutional leaders who have committed to reimagining what inclusive support truly looks like.
Parenting students are a vital part of our College community — balancing academics, work, and caregiving as they pursue their degrees. This premiere invited us all to listen, learn, and lead with care.
More than a curriculum launch — it’s a movement toward equity, empathy, and impact.
Come celebrate their stories. Learn practical strategies. Be part of the change.

Resources
If you’re a currently enrolled MC student with children, you can access free baby supplies, hygiene items, food, and more—right on campus! These resources are available through the Wellness Center, making it easy and convenient for student-parents on the go. Visit the Wellness Center to learn more and find what you need.
Balancing school and raising a family can stretch your budget, but we offer financial aid options designed specifically for student-parents. From scholarships to emergency funds, we’re here to make sure you have the financial support you need. Get more information on how to apply for financial aid.
We know that child care can be a barrier to academic success. We work with you to find financial resources, such as the Parent Student Support Fund (a scholarship program), which can help cover expenses related to pursuing a college degree. At the Germantown Campus, the Center for Early Education is a preschool program for children ages 3 to 5 years—an option that may work for some student parents. Learn more about MC child care support and resources. You can also see more resources under MC Resources below.
