AP Summer Institute at Montgomery College

Designed for teachers that are interested in teaching  Advanced Placement® courses

The Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) offers 30+ hours of subject specific professional development that equips new and experienced teachers with content and resources to enhance their teaching of AP® courses courses. The APSI provided a unique opportunity for teachers to exchange ideas and information with peers.

Topics that are often covered in summer institute sessions include:

  • AP courses: goals, objectives, content, resources, bibliographies, and equipment
  • Strategies for teaching students at beginning or intermediate levels
  • The AP Examination: how it is developed and graded
  • Syllabi, lesson plans, and assignments
  • How to refresh and improve existing AP courses
  • Recent changes in AP Course Descriptions
  • Updates to course curriculum and exam

If you have any questions regarding APSI courses for Summer 2020, please email APSI@montgomerycollege.edu, and include: Name, Session interested in attending, School district; please indicate MCPS or DCPS if applicable.

All participants must pre-register for the AP Summer Institute. Pre-registration information will be captured by CVENT. This will allow us to be able to reserve a seat for you in the class of your choosing. Participants will be sent further registration instructions within two business days of completing their pre-registration.

All participants MUST Pre-Register

All participants MUST Pre-Register for the AP Summer Institute at Montgomery College  via CVENT, Pre-Registration Form. By pre-registering, it  shows your interest in attending and will allow us to send registration instructions; please note that registration is not complete until payment with Montgomery College has been received and processed.  Montgomery College registration opens April 27, 2020.

APSI Pre-Registration Form

  If your employer will complete and sign the Business and Industry Agreement (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader.-Link opens in new window.) , the out of state fee will be waived. You must present the completed, signed B & I Agreement (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader.-Link opens in new window.)  along with your registration form at the time of registration.

 

If you cannot attend this event, you may receive a refund if dropped  PRIOR to the event start date.

To receive a full refund, the event MUST BE dropped BEFORE the refund date printed on your registration confirmation.  Refunds will be issued to the person listed on the registration form, NOT the payee.

Options for dropping the course are:

  • Log into MyMC, MC student account, and drop the event; classes CANNOT be dropped online after the class has begun, a Drop Form MUST be submitted.
  • Complete a Drop Form and submit via email to APSI@montgomerycollege.edu or fax to 240-567-1877.
  • Drop form may be found at Drop/Transfer.

You should receive a confirmation from Montgomery College within two business days of receipt of your pre-registration with CVENT. This will contain a Montgomery College Registration Form and/or further instructions. If not received, please email APSI@montgomerycollege.edu; do not assume that your registration is complete. Full registration requires payment. 
There are two locations this summer. Classes are held at Montgomery College's Rockville Campus ( see map ) or the Germantown Campus ( see map ). AP Biology will be at the Rockville campus, all other classes will be held at the Germantown campus
If you are local, you may drive daily to the Institute. Parking permits are not required over the summer. Be sure to park in Student designated spaces. If you are coming from a distance, airport and hotel information is provided below.
The Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Germantown, MD is close to the APSI. Feel free to search Trip Advisornew window, or the website of your choice to find other accommodations. 

Local airports are:

  • DCA Reagan Nation Airport (located in Washington, D.C.)
  • BWI, Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (located in Baltimore, Md)
  • IAD, Dulles International Airport (located in Virginia)

Montgomery College's Germantown Campus ( see map)
There is no dress code for the Institute. Weather in Maryland tends to be hot and humid during this time of the year. Past participants have suggested bringing a sweater for air-conditioned classrooms. Note: If you are taking a science class with a lab, you must wear closed toe shoes in the lab.
Most instructors ask that you bring copies of a lesson plan to share. A laptop is not required but many feel it is good to bring one to open documents and to use email. Campus locations are Wi-Fi enabled.

Lunch will be provided. Please note that no food or drink is allowed in computer classrooms or labs. Please advise if there are food allergies.

College Board® requires 30 (thirty) hours in order to receive three CEU's. Montgomery College will issue a Certificate of Completion on the last day of the APSI.
