Effective October 1, 2020, every applicant for a Maryland Special Police Officer commission must receive 80 hours of training based on 61 state-mandated Objectives (Maryland HB1111). MC is utilizing the expertise of law enforcement and public safety instructors to prepare the SPO candidate for required job-related skills that include:
- Constitutional and Criminal Law
- De-escalation techniques
- CPR / first aid
- Rules of arrest and criminal process
- Active shooter, incident command
- Note taking and report procedures

Upon successful completion, and 100% attendance, the SPO candidate will receive a Certificate of Completion that is required when applying for a commission.

- Hours: 80 (ten 8-hour sessions)
- Course Dates: May 9 - May 26, 2022
- Schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on the following days:
- May 9-12 (M,T,W,R) - Online (SR)
- May 16, 17 (M,T) - In-Person (Rockville Campus)
- May 23-26 (M,T,W,R) - Online (SR)
- Investment: $400 tuition + $395 fee = $795.
- Non-MD residents add $250
Structured Remote (SR) classes meet live online during the designated times via Zoom.

Registration Options starting April 4, 2022
- Online Registration: You must have a Montgomery College student account. This gives you access to the MyMC portal for online registration. You may view our WDCE Web Registration page to get information about creating an account where you will find step by step directions with pictures to help guide you through the process as either a new student or returning student.

Please note: Payment is due at the time of registration. Students who register without payment would be removed from the class without notice.
Special Police Officer Interest Indicator FormUpon completion, the SPO candidate will receive a Certificate of Completion that is required when applying for a commission. This course will help to ensure that the following businesses and governmental units have candidates with the required training and skills to achieve their commission, while gaining the confidence to protect business guests and assets:
- Colleges and universities
- K-12 school systems
- Court system employees
- Retail establishments, restaurants
- Hospitals and healthcare facilities
