Culture of Evidence

As an Achieving the Dream institution, we recognize that we must create a culture of evidence where there is a routine practice of using data-informed decision making to close achieving gaps and improve student outcomes in a continuous cycle of improvement. The information and documents stored here are ones that inform decision making and design of initiatives and interventions.

Student Success Goals

We have many ways to measure student success here at the College, but we wanted to have three clearly defined metrics to measure our progress.  However, we do not want to just track our past experiences, we want to set benchmarks for the future.  Our Success Goals, which were approved by the Board of Trustees in June 2018, include:

  • Associate Degree and Credential Completion is measured using the four-year graduation rate of the Maryland Performance Accountability Report (PAR) cohort, which includes all students who have attempted 18 credits or more in their first two years at Montgomery College.

    Associate Degree and Credential Completion
    COHORT Fall 2009 Fall 2010 Fall 2011 Fall 2012 Fall 2013 Fall 2014 Fall 2015 Fall 2016 Fall 2017 Benchmark for Fall 2018
    MEASURE POINT 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022
    PAR Data 20% 21% 18% 21%           30%

  • Transfer Rates will use the same PAR cohort and measure the percentage of students transferring to a four-year school to continue their education within four years of beginning at Montgomery College.

    Transfer Rates
    COHORT Fall 2009 Fall 2010 Fall 2011 Fall 2012 Fall 2013 Fall 2014 Fall 2015 Fall 2016 Fall 2017 Benchmark for Fall 2018
    MEASURE POINT 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022
    PAR Data 47% 44% 43% 36%           50%

  • Baccalaureate Degree Completion will use data from the National Student Clearinghouse to track students who leave Montgomery College (with or without a degree) and complete a Baccalaureate degree within eight years of initial enrollment at Montgomery College.

    Baccalaureate Degree Completion
    COHORT Fall 2008 Fall 2009 Fall 2010 Fall 2011 Fall 2012 Fall 2013 Benchmark for Fall 2014
    MEASURE POINT 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022
    NSC Data 35% 34%         38%

Institutional Capacity Assessment Tool (ICAT) Report (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader - Link opens in new window)
This online assessment tool, developed by ATD, helps us to measure our strengths and areas for improvement in the seven key dimensions outlined in the Institutional Capacity Framework.

The Student Voice (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader - Link opens in new window)
In 2016, Montgomery College’s Fall Opening Meeting focused on student success. In addition to faculty and staff, 163 students attended and sat at the tables with employees. With the intention of hearing the student voice concerning their experiences at MC, table leaders led an activity for the students to tell their stories. This report summarizes those findings.

Metric of the Month
The Metric of the Month is a data literacy tool sponsored by the ATD Data Team. Each month throughout the academic year, the ATD Data Team highlights one institutional indicator related to student success and accountability.

Data Summits
With the help of the Data Coach, Montgomery College conducts data summits to engage the broader college and community in courageous conversations about student outcomes and performance gaps across groups.

Achieving the Dream-Alignment to Accreditation (PDF, Get Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader - Link opens in new window)
In Spring 2018, Montgomery College will undergo a comprehensive reaccreditation process by our accreditor, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The PowerPoint outlines the ways that the Achieving the Dream work-especially the ICAT and Student Voice Report-align with accreditation and the culture of evidence required for student success.
