Our General Studies Program provides an opportunity for you to focus your studies in one of three discipline cores, a combination of those areas, or a chance to start your journey while exploring your options.

Z-Degree
This degree is available as a Z-Degree—no textbook purchases required. (Learn more about Z-degrees).

Students enrolled in General Studies at Montgomery College will need to complete at least 15 credits from courses offered within a chosen core discipline, including a minimum of 3 credits at the 200 level.

The Humanities, Arts, Communication and Languages Core allows students to begin their studies in the following areas: English, Film, History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Women’s and Gender Studies and World Languages.

Undecided Which Discipline Core is Right For You?

Begin your studies by focusing on General Education courses. As a General Studies Undecided (GENU) student, you may earn up to 24 credits before deciding on a core discipline area.

All GENU students must select a core before completing 30 credits in order to meet degree requirements and graduate.

Students opting to enter as GENU are strongly encouraged to meet with an academic advisor to discuss their options when determining what is best for their academic and career goals.
